Gingerbread Houses

Making gingerbread houses was never one of our family traditions; in fact, I can't remember if I have ever made one before. Three years ago, Morgan made one with her cousin Kiersten (Ruth and Aaron's daughter). That was about it until this year.

One store in town has had a "gingerbread house in a box" right inside its entrance since before Thanksgiving. My girls ask for one every time we're there. Their desire to buy one became ever more intense when they saw my friend Denise had done some with her kids. On our last visit, the price had dropped way down and I was desperately looking for things to keep my girls from fighting -- so we got the gingerbread house.

Morgan and Brynne had a great time putting it together. I thought we actually did a good job. I let each girl do one side however they wanted. (i.e. They told me where to put the frosting, and then they put the candy where they wanted.) And they also didn't fight one little bit while we were actually making the house! Yeah!

If gingerbread house making becomes a holiday tradition (and it might), it'll be the tradition we do right before Christmas when the prepackaged and ready-do-go kits are on a really good sale.

A new Christmas tradition. How fun and a good idea doing it close to Christmas when you need extra activities. Are they planning to eat it later?
