I read a book in July 2010 that began a long journey for me. The book was "Eat To Live" by Joel Fuhrman. I read it on the recommendation of my sister Alyson, who learned about the book from some friends of hers that stayed with them for a few days. Right after finishing that book, I read "The China Study" and "Green For Life." These books opened my eyes to the affect what we eat has on our bodies - way more than just the amount of weight or energy we have!
I began making changes for our family to cut out gluten and meat from our diet. Not long after, however, I became pregnant with Melissa. With the nausea, I had to eat whatever sounded okay at any given moment. Lee was great about trying to stick to my new diet hopes when he fed the girls for me, but over time we went back to gluten (although always whole grain). We do a very limited amount of meat, but it is almost always just beef and chicken from animals that are grain fed and not kept in confined spaces.
When Melissa was several months old, I started reading more and trying to make positive diet changes again. I could spend a great deal of time talking about what all I learned and believe, but suffice it to say that I have been trying to switch our family to a diet made up of almost exclusively veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and whole grains. It has been a huge trial trying to make the switch for my older girls. I've been trying to feed Melissa that way from the beginning, and she is a very healthy little eater. Lee also has been great!! He read "The China Study" and has also been trying to make positive diet changes. In fact, he works hard to prepare healthy meals and snacks to take with him on trips so he isn't eating out all the time - I am seriously so proud of him!!
The biggest change has been for me personally. It is fun to look back over the past several years and see where I am now with diet compared to where I was. The best part is that my uncomfortable bloating and irritable bowel issues are almost totally gone. They only resurface when I eat something I know I shouldn't. And I have TONS more energy!!! I honestly feel like I've discovered the secret of the universe that holds power for the health changes and cures scientists have been searching for! If any of you would like to know more on this topic, let me know. :)

Not long ago, I also began to worry about all the chemical cleaners in our home. We have way less than the average person, but I didn't want to have any. I started researching making homemade cleaners, but then I discovered something a step up from that - a product that allows you to clean and sanitize with just water! Norwex.
My sister Ashley and I learned about Norwex in March and set about on a quest to get all the chemicals out of our homes. I was so completely impressed with the product and with the company in general, that I decided to sign up as a Norwex consultant! This has given me a fun, positive thing to do in my "spare" time. I have been using it as an excuse to make trips to visit people that I otherwise wouldn't make (tax write off!).
If you would like to learn more about Norwex, check out my website at www.hilaryroberts.norwex.biz.

I didn't plan on writing about these two things when I first sat down to catch up on blogs, but I realized they are both a major part of my life these days. In fact, they are a lot of the reason I am so far behind in blogging. :) I firmly, honestly, sincerely believe in these things, so I wanted to share. Please let me know if you'd like to know more about either! And in the meantime, keep your fingers crossed I succeed in doing some catching up here! :)
