I had a really neat experience happen to Brynne and me this morning. We were on our way to the gym when we got stopped by a red light (if we'd been going just a tiny bit faster we would have made the light). When the light turned green and we proceeded forward, we came around a curve in the road and saw that an accident had just happened at the bottom of the hill. The group of cars we had been traveling with before we hit the light seemed to be involved in the accident. The main part of the accident (the cars that were the most torn up) were on the other side of the road, but the cars I'd been traveling with seemed to have swerved to avoid whatever happened and apparently had several fender benders of their own.
When I first saw what happened, it was very obvious to me that had I not stopped at the light, I would have been involved. I thought that I probably would have just been in the fender benders with the rest of the people on my side of the road. Later on, however, as I was thinking back, I realized that I would have been turning left at the light just past the accident; which would have put me right where the worst cars were.
Obviously we were protected, but you realize how much when you understand how big a deal it was for me to miss that stop light. On that particular stretch of road, I have basically made "catching the light" a game. Usually all cars get stopped at that light, but lately I'd realized those who sped up to the speed limit quickly could sometimes make it. I normally pay very close attention to my speed and trying to time things to hit the light right. As it was today, instead I was taking my sweet time down the road. I don't remember what I was thinking about, but I wasn't paying any attention to trying to speed up quickly to the speed limit. I "came to" just in time to realize that if I hurried I could still make the light. I got into the left lane and sped up slightly to pass a slow-going truck. When the light turned yellow, the truck chose to keep going, and I chose to stop.
When I got to the scene of the accident, the slow truck was pulled off to the side of the road. It didn't appear to have been involved. I'm guessing it was witness to the whole mess and pulled over to help out and provide some testimony when the police made it to the scene. I would have passed him and been on the part of the road where things were the worst. No one appeared to be too badly hurt, but cars were pretty munched. And chances are, we would have been right in it.
I've decided today is a good day to start a Gratitude Journal. I can not count all the times in my life when I have been the recipient of blessings from the Lord. Sometimes they've been big, and sometimes they have been small. I'm sure there have even been some blessings I haven't noticed. Today's blessing was, in my eyes, a miracle. It takes a miracle to make my brain go into la-la land when I'm driving! :) I am SO thankful that, as my sister Ashley put it, the Lord decided our family has enough trials for right now so He steered me clear (literally) of being involved in the accident.
(On a lighter note...and I don't want to minimize the neatness of the whole experience above by saying this...but I just experienced another, but much smaller, miracle: I ran spell check and had actually spelled every word in this whole blog correctly! Wow!)

Just thinking about your experience and that you were spared has made me so happy all day. I will definitely thank the Lord tonight. another topic. Unfortunately this blog does not have spell check - that I know of - so you will have to put up with all of the words I make up because I am not a good speller.
Whew! What an experience and a good teaching moment for your family. Glad you guys were protected!
